The Coach Journey
The Fen's fragile landscape doesn't lie still for the stranger to rest their minds; deceiving us through a simple horizontal plane that contradicts the undulations and intricacies of its tenacious independence. This idiosyncratic topography hides the watery intimidation and vulnerability it possesses.
For Beacon I created a sound work for the coach journey, a specific part of the coach journey where the bus pulls out of the tight curve of the B1183 at Frithville and heads on a straight trajectory towards Revesby. This landscape is no place like my home, the city streets and closed doors of suburbia reveal a different narrative to this territory, and here I am searching for some common ground and trying to hear the plot that the wind blows past my ears.
Our experience of the world is framed by memory and association, our understanding formed by a non-linear narrative; our minds are woven with a fabric of memories, past jumps into present when we least expect it and can re-write the physicality of our existence in any place, or indeed on the journey that we take to get there.
My work explores factual histories and fictional realities, creating evocative situations through a variety of media. I wish to invite the audience to become an active participant through layering their own experiences and thoughts into my work.
