Still Life

A one day only commissioned art event

Still Life, Gillian Dyson

Artist Gillian Dyson created a unique artwork in response to the heritage of the empty Georgian building. This was exhibited in a one-day only art event to which the public was invited to attend and participate.

Gillian Dyson, Still Life

The artist’s Still Life was unlike traditional representations in paint. Made up instead from local produce; lost artifacts from the museum archive; real and artifical momento mori; text; sound; light and shadow. She said, “it is about response and suggestion, reflecting on a given site, context or audience. I work with history, imagination, the playful and the violent.” Audience members were able to explore the Mansion House and view the artwork. They were invited to create their own responses to Still Life, whether in the form of sketches or other media such as poetry. These were displayed in the hall, becoming a part of the Still Life.

Commissioned by Beacon Art Project, Still Life also marked the launch of
The Louth Mansion House Project
to transform this grade II* listed building,
built in c. 1750 for assemblies, musical events and exhibitions into an arts centre of significance.

Beacon Bimonthlies will take place in three Lincolnshire districts: East Lindsey; North Kesteven and West Lindsey, hosted where possible in unusual heritage locations within the community, not usually open to the public. The events will feature presentations from invited guest artists, taking the form of performances, powerpoints, film screenings or talks. Audience members will also be invited to participate, by showing examples of their own works and responding to the host venues for presentation at future meetings. Audience members will not be restricted to the visual arts although invited guest speakers will be visual artists.

Our Name is Legion

In November 2008, Beacon Art Project commissioned artist Kelly Large to take up residence at Kesteven & Sleaford High School and produce an art work in response to this educational context located within a historic, rural town.

She observed the school day, where roughly between the hours of 8.30 am - 3.30 pm, the pupils' movements and behaviours are precisely managed and contained within the school's boundaries.   Wandering round town between these times there was little evidence that Sleaford contained three secondary schools in spitting distance of the Market Place, the square at the centre of the town.   As a consequence of the lack of presence the students had on the town during school time, the after school routine, when approximately 2500 young people, from KSHS and nearby secondary schools, exit the school grounds and spill into the town centre, took on an extraordinary quality.   The artist was particularly captured by the sheer volume of students who amass and disperse and the affect this has on the town.

Our Name is Legion will take place on an undisclosed date in April.   At the end of the school day all secondary and sixth-form students from Sleaford schools will be invited to don a high-visibility vest from the moment they leave school to the moment they arrive home.   Thus transforming the pupils into a mass of singular colour, that flows along the main thoroughfares, to congregate in significant locations, such as Market Place, Sleaford train station, key bus-stops and then over a period of 45 minutes, gradually disband.   The artwork will be video-recorded from key locations around the town and also by pupils from within the throng.

In the direct context of Sleaford Our Name is Legion signals the complex relationship the students have with the town. The appropriation of this routine, daily fluctuation as art event seeks to make vivid an everyday occurrence in order to explore resident's awareness of their town's social structure; each student is local, an inhabitant of Sleaford or the surrounding area, yet the mass assembly differentiates between town and school populations, temporarily defining the youth as an anonymous, culturally defined group, that are simultaneously 'inside' the community and separate from it.   This interplay between mass and individual, lack of or excess public prominence, in a specific geographical and cultural environment, reflects to some extent the status of young people within wider society, as they start to forge an identify for themselves that is both individual and conforms to societal expectations.

However, this is not an artwork about the representation of young people.   Those who cannot or choose not to take part, such as the town's people, the artist, Beacon (the commissioner) and the student dissenters are not absent from this moment.   It is likely that their non-participation will be write large on the event - signalled through the dilute effect their own clothing will have on the spectacle.   The title of the work, Our Name is Legion has military connotations and is taken from a biblical parable in which Jesus meets a man possessed by many demons, and when asked their name, they respond: 'Our name is legion, for we are many'.   It has been referenced in many political and pop culture contexts, used to suggest the destabilising power of the assembling mass and the ambiguous power-play between multitude and individual.   Used here, it points towards the artwork offering possibilities for acting collectively or alone and the visibility or invisibility these positions afford in different social arenas; it also acknowledges society's uneasy and agoraphobic relationship to the gathering 'crowd' in open spaces.

The documentation will be screened at a public event at The Hub, the National Centre for Craft and Design, in Sleaford on Friday 19 June 2009, 6-8pm. Spaces are limited, so to ensure a place please email Beacon: info@beaconartproject.com
